Joshua 24: 15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
There are many things in this world that try to drag our focus off of our Savior and build our alliances with them, instead of where they ought properly to be. The question is: If we know rightly where our allegiance should be; with Jesus, why is it that we find ourselves serving/following/investing our time deeper with other people or objects?
My answer to this is simple, you will build the tightest bonds with the one or ones you spend the most time with! Simple as that!
In the verse for the day, Joshua had gathered the tribes of Israel shortly before his death to remind them to follow the only one that had been true to them all along and to ask them that day whom they would pledge their allegiance to. Granted, Joshua reminded them that they had other choices as well, but they had to make a choice; it was up to them. Who would they serve/ build the deepest relationship with? We too have these choices. What is your choice?
I believe the message is the same today for us. Who/what are we devoting our time to? Who/what occupies our mind, time and heart the most? Do we have a better relationship with TV shows and their characters, Facebook, money, work or our hobbies than we do with God? Joshua knew the same as Moses did that one can only serve God in sincerity and truth if he has freely and willingly pledged in his heart to do so. It's a relationship thing!
Today, resolve in yourself, or renew your current pledge that nothing will take the place of God in your life, and then live that way. Spend more time building your relationship/serving God then anything else. I cannot stress to you enough, just as Joshua made his urgent plea to the children of Israel; serve the one true God and nothing else. Devote your energies there! In the end, only one relationship will have the utmost impact on your life and your eternity. It won't be Facebook, TV, games, hobbies, money, fame, friends or family; it will be the relationship you spent time or did not spend time serving/building with Jesus.
If you want to serve the One True God but find life is overwhelming you right now to the point that it is humanly difficult for you to serve anyone or anything fully; seek God. Ask Jesus to remove those things from your life that are clouding your ability to follow Him fully and to fill you with the Holy Spirit that will build in you a passion to serve Him. There is nothing more important! God will answer your prayer and as you choose daily to serve Him it will become easier to focus on the only thing that really matters in this life; your relationship with God!
